RIVERS CASINO PITTSBURGH’S “RIVERS GIVES” TEAM
VOLUNTEER WITH ALLEGHENY CLEANWAYS
PITTSBURGH — July 26, 2022 — Team Members from Rivers Casino Pittsburgh will be volunteering with Allegheny CleanWays on Wednesday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to noon. Team Members will help clean litter and debris from the Heritage Trail that runs behind Rivers Casino, and they will also board a 28-foot pontoon boat and help clean debris that has accumulated along the shoreline.
Allegheny CleanWays has been instrumental in engaging and partnering with community groups to remove more than 5.4 million pounds of debris, including more than 36,000 tires, from vacant lots, wooded hillsides, alleyways, roadsides, streams, and riverbanks. Each year hundreds of volunteers work with them to remove trash from the landscape to improve community health and vitality.
“The work that Allegheny CleanWays does on a daily basis is what keeps Pittsburgh going as the clean and vibrant city that it is,” said Dr. Rahmon Hart, director of community relations at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh.
While they continue to partner with an expanding list of organizations to do the cleanup work, Allegheny CleanWays also works on litter and illegal dumping prevention, conduct cleanup coordinator workshops, and have become active in advocating for policies to reduce the amount of trash produced, such as reducing the use of single-use plastics and making it easier for consumers to recycle electronics (e.g., TVs, microwaves, stereos).
“We truly appreciate the relationship we have developed with the Rivers Gives team,” said Hannah Hohman, Water-Based Program Coordinator at Allegheny CleanWays. “We look forward to our volunteer day each year.”
Rivers Gives is the casino’s long-running community outreach program, in which casino staffers report to work at a local nonprofit instead of the gaming floor. This is the ninth day of service with Allegheny CleanWays by the Rivers Gives team in recent years. Earlier this spring, Rivers Gives volunteers also worked with Veterans Place repainting an outside deck and lounge area.
